HOLBORN | DINING ROOM

by dailykongfidence

A grand British brasserie set inside the Rosewood London hotel and near Covent Garden, the Holborn Dining Room is just the vibrant bustling salon I was searching for. Serving up locally sourced British cuisine including a children’s menu affectionately called Rosebuds, the menu consists of Charcuterie, Starters, Seafood Counter, Eggs & Sandwiches, Grill, Mains, Sides, and Afters.

The interior decor is luxe yet casual chic with beautifully carved oak chairs and booths tufted with red leather, antique mirrors, and copper topped bars. The waiters are clad in tartan trousers and black blazers adding to the festive atmosphere of the dining room. There are bars on opposite sides of the restaurant, perfect for gathering with friends over Gin and tonic pairings from the infamous Gin Bar.

/ The Gin Bar /
The Gin Bar offers London’s largest collection of Gin featuring over 14,000 possible Gin and tonic pairings! A true haven for Gin lovers indeed. And recently added, the Gin Bar now offers weekly Gin Masterclasses on Saturdays at 4PM.

/ The Drink /
My drink of choice this evening was the Sir Charles. I asked the waiter, Adela, for something on the sweet side and this was the perfect recommendation. Beautifully assembled, this drink is a smooth blend of Sipsmith Sloe Gin, Apricot Brandy, Fresh Lime Juice, and the frothiest Lemoncello Foam. Topped with two vibrant petals, I throughly enjoyed photographing and drinking this cocktail.

/ The Starter & The Seafood Counter /
Having just been to Barcelona, I longed for some octopus. I started my dinner with the Grilled Octopus with native chorizo and a touch of aioli. The octopus was grilled to perfection, not too charred and just the right amount of chewiness.

Staying with my seafood theme, I ordered the shellfish cocktail with crab. Layered between leaves of lettuce was a blend of crab meat and shrimp with cucumbers and avocado. Stacked several piles high with a sweet but light dressing, this was probably my favorite dish of all. Super fresh and crisp, it was the ideal starter to my main meal. The Cornish rare bread that accompanied our starters was something unique and unexpected, but I really liked it. The consistency of the bread was a bit chewy and dense and the crust was hard. I liked it so much that I asked the waiter if it was available for purchase in London to which he replied that it was an uncommon bread and one they just added to the menu and was testing out the response. It definitely gets a two thumbs up from me!

/ The Main /
I opted for the daily fish special which was the sea bass and the hubby ordered a 35 day aged “Club Cut” rib eye. The sea bass came pan seared with the skin on to maintain some crispiness over ribbons of yellow and green zucchini. The fish was delicious but I really enjoyed the zucchini that came with it. I didn’t try the rib eye as I was already stuffed from everything else I ate prior to my main entree, but the hubby left his plate clean also finishing off the crispy onion rings that came with the rib eye.

/ The Sides /
To balance out our indulgent dinner, we ordered the steamed spinach and truffle & parmesan fries. The steamed spinach was pretty standard, but I did enjoy the flakes of Maldon sea salt that accompanied the spinach. As for the truffle Fries, I am quite a fries connoisseur and I must admit that these fries are one of the best truffle & parmesan fries I have ever had. If I hadn’t already eaten everything I had already ordered, I would have ordered another side of fries (yes, it was that good).

Needless to say, we were stuffed by the end of our meal and didn’t even have room for any dessert. I must come back and try some of their Glazed Lemon Tart with creme fraiche and Flourless Chocolate Fondant with orange ice cream.

The service was prompt and our waiter Adela was very attentive. He made excellent suggestions (must I remind you of that beautiful drink and the sea bass which were his recommendations) and also explained each menu item as it arrived. The pleasant ambiance also added to our overall dining experience which was amazing and I would definitely come here again to try the Holborn Dining Room’s iconic handcrafted pies and their Saturday Gin Masterclasses.

This is the best part about traveling! Experiencing the great cuisine and atmosphere of the city that you are exploring.
The interior and mood of this Holborn restaurant is so chic and casual at the same time which makes it so inviting.
And omg! It must be so hard to decide on a gin when there are sooook many to choose from! I would never be able to decided!
I can’t wait to hear more about your London experience! So happy that you and your family are having the best time.

I’m not really big on seafood, but grilled octopus sounds pretty intriguing. It’s not something I would have ordered myself, but seeing your pics makes me so hungry! I also just got introduced to the deliciousness of truffle fries a couple of months ago. I’ll never eat regular fries again!

Omg that gin bar is just a dream!!! So many of my friends hate gin but I’ve always been a massive gin and tonic girl and any cocktail that contains gin has my vote any day. Too bad I can’t drink at the moment but you’ll just have to enjoy a drink for me 😉

The food looks so damn delicious and the seafood looks so divine! Would love to check it out when I’m in London

I am obsessed with the decor for the Holborn dining room. The red leather chair looks so rich and luxurious with a hint of masculine charm and the gin bar, oh my nothing short of a grand display. I don’t drink gin, but I would sit there just for the ambiance. The food looked delicious, I know my hubby would go for the 35 day aged rib eye and I am a sucker for a good grilled octopus! Def bookmarked for when I’m ever in London.

Holborn Dining Room Looks so lovely and a place my husband would like the design of. 14,000 options makes my incisive mind go nuts! If I visit, I’ll definitely take a page out of your book and order the Sir Charles! It sounds absolutely tasty! Seafood is my absolute favorite! I’m itching to go to Barcelona after reading your last post and devour some amazing seafood. Grilled Octopus with native chorizo sounds phenomenal. I’ve never heard of Cornish rare bread but I need to visit Holborn Dining Room just to try that alone after your recommendation. I absolutely love sea bass and it’s been a moment since I’ve had it after moving away from a coastal town. The side sounds like a perfect paring with your meals and I’m swooning over your images. Too bad you were too full for the desert! I love to end my meal with lemon so the Glazed Lemon Tart would be perfect!

This literally looks so good. I’ve actually never had octopus. I’m too squeamish when it comes to texture! That drink looks absolutely divine. I’m always up for an amazing drink and a fancy bar. I love the bougie stuff as I call it haha. And when it comes to a variety of options I feel like I’d try to go with something I wouldn’t normally get!

Uhhh yes please sign me up! This food looks amazing and so do the drinks. Now that I’m out of school and work I’m always in the mood to
try new places to eat and hang out. This looks like a good one. That Gin bar looks so cool. If only I liked gin! Either way I’d love to check it out because
the experience, I think would be one for the books. I’ve really got to get some trips booked. I’m in the traveling mood, but when life gets in the way you just
keep letting life happen. I also need to get more fancy with my food choices. I tried octopus while in Italy and the texture was different. It tasted pretty good though.
