ROSEWOOD | LONDON

by dailykongfidence

A sense of place where luxury meets all the comforts of home. As soon as you enter the grand archway through the central carriageway portico, your breath pauses for a few seconds to take in the magnificent Edwardian courtyard and the majestic architecture of the Rosewood London hotel.

The Rosewood London is a luxury retreat situated in one of London’s most historic throughfares dating back to the Roman times. This stunning building began construction in 1912, expanding in stages for nearly 50 years to the breathtaking, five star hotel it is now. The architecture alone blew me away and then I saw the inside…

From the beautifully manicured courtyard where classic cars line the driveway and valets clad in camel coats and plaid trousers warmly greet you (every single time), you enter into the Rose Bronze gallery beaming from the natural light that ever so perfectly radiates from the beautifully imported bronze from Asia. The sliding doors automatically spread open guiding you into the lobby which is lavish in design. Luxury surrounds you in every meticulous detail, yet the hotel feels more like home with the illuminated candles, plush sofas and intimate chairs, coffee table books and jars of chocolate for the guests (you can bet my kids dug into that candy jar a few times too many). Subtle reminders that you are in London catch your eye from the British authored books that line the shelves to the artwork fashioned by British designers that adorn the walls. Statues of bulldogs and soccer figurines are also reminders that you are in England. In addition to the very serene feel, you are welcomed not only by the courteous staff at the Rosewood, but also Pearl, the resident Golden Retriever who calls the Rosewood London home. You can imagine my kids’ delight to find that a dog resides here and has his very own plush dog bed right in the middle of the lobby (needless to say this was the highlight of their stay)!

While every rich and glamourous detail of the lobby blows you away, the true centerpiece of this hotel is the exquisite Italian Grand Pavonazzo seven-story marble staircase that is comprised of ten different marbles seven of which can no longer be found in the world. I could spend hours photographing this dramatic staircase, the elliptical dome overhead, and the bird cages on floors two and three which are homes to parakeets that softly chirp at the site of guests.

Despite the lavish entrance and lobby, the elegant guestrooms offer a sense of coming home to a private manor rather than a hotel room. From the tall ceilings to the natural light that floods the room, to the textured wood veneers, grey tweed headboard, benches and sitting chair, and soft leather stools, the guest rooms offer a sense of historic character and warmth. Upon arrival we were surprised with sweet monogrammed treats for the children as well as a lovely book on the Rosewood London, sterling silver pen, and a leather keychain symbolizing Pearl (the house dog and man’s best friend). After busy days exploring the city, it was pure bliss to come home to the king sized room with adjoining two twin bedrooms as our private sanctuary. I made a cup of espresso with the in room Nespresso machine while the kids melted into the cozy, inviting beds of the suite. Everyday ended perfectly because we felt at home.

The bathrooms are also charming featuring Italian marble, spacious standing shower with two shower heads, and hand beaten alpaca silver finishes. The D.R. Harris & Co. toiletries leave you smelling like fresh English roses. Details such as spacious drawers and ample counterspace do not go unnoticed as well as the high powered blow dryer that dries your hair in mere minutes.

Located in central London and walking distance to Covent Gardens and Picadilly Square, the Rosewood London is in the ideal location to step outside and go discover the city. Amazing restaurants and shopping as well as tourist attractions such as The British Museum are near by as well as the Underground station. In addition, the Rosewood London has impressive restaurants inside the hotel such as Holborn Dining Room, infamous for their Gin Bar (I wrote a separate post on my experience here), Scarfes Bar named after English cartoonist Gerald Scarfe, Mirror Room which features floor to ceiling mirrors for casual dining in a jewel box of a room, and Afternoon Tea with contemporary art, a beautiful and modern spin on the classic tea time.

While many five star hotels exist in London, the Rosewood London stands out most notably for their attention to detail. Unexpected, little details that may not seem to matter, but make all the difference to their guests. Details such as complimentary bottles of water that are left in your room and replenished throughout your day, fresh apples or mini chocolate bars in the lobby or at the elevator banks, round tables in the guest rooms in place of a writing desk help to promote gathering together rather than working (communal tables are provided in the lobby where you can plug in and work while enjoying some tea), benches and leather stools as well as tufted chairs in the suites for family travel, greetings from the valet to every staff member you pass in the hallway, and the subtle references to London’s culture and history throughout the hotel. When you stay at the Rosewood London, you truly feel at home. With this feeling of sense of place you know you are creating lasting memories in this landmark hotel. I can truly say that our trip to London was made more unforgettable and extraordinary because of the Rosewood London hotel.

This hotel looks absolutely amazing. Our family is doing a London-Paris trip in a few months. We’re going to look into switching to the Rosewood London. Or maybe do a half-half split as we’d like to stay near Notting Hill for part of the trip. Did you like the location of the hotel? Was it hustle bustle (which we like) or kind of in a quiet area? Thanks for your review and tips.

How exciting! Notting Hill is a great place to stay but I also think you would love the area of the Rosewood. It is walking distance to Covent Garden which is soooo adorable, lots of shopping, and Picadilly which has all the theatres for musicals and so many amazing restaurants (try Dishoom). It was hustle and bustle right outside the hotel because there is so much to do and the Tube/ Underground is also located super close by and the hotel was busy especially in the evenings because of their amazing restaurants like Holborn and Scarfes. The kids loved the candy jars in the hotel and of course Pearl, the Golden Retriever. Definitely check it out, I think you would LOVE it.

The Rosewood Hotel looks amazing! I usually stay at The Dorchestor or Grosvenor House when I go there, but on my next trip I am definitely going to stay at The Rosewood. The place looks amazing. I love the interior, its the perfect mix of traditional you’d expect and love from England and modern (in the rooms) to keep with current interior trends.

You are right in the architecture blowing you away as my breath was taken too at the first image in this post! The Edwardian courtyard is truly impeccable at Rosewood London hotel. Your description of the hotel lobby truly transported me there! You my friend, were meant to blog! I love the sweet pup that graces the Rosewood and it’s likely that both my children and I would indulge in the chocolates! You look magnificent gracing the stairs in that red dress! I love the cozy feel of the rooms. Luxurious yet home like is a winning combination. I love the items that awaited you and your family when you checked into your room. What great attention to detail! It’s perfect that it’s in a central location and close to the Covent Gardens and Piccadilly Square! I must visit here next time I’m in London!

All these details are amazing! When I was in London I was at a place that was not even half as nice. And I love that the inside is as gorgeous as the exterior. And your room is huge! I love that they paid as much attention to the deets in the room as in the lobby. So impressive! Sounds like a great stay!

Christine, I’ve stayed in quite a few hotels, but this hotel review of Rosewood London blew me away. You end it by saying it’s all in the details and that is true. A five star hotel can boast with whatever they want, but if the details aren’t thought through, it’s just another hotel and you could as easily be in Jakarta, The North Pole or Cape Town as they all look the same. What I find the most appealing about Rosewood is the homeliness of it. It is a hotel I certainly need to try out and despite living in London every other week, why not do a staycation? Besides I have to meet Pearl! Thank you for a lovely tip!

What a gorgeous hotel! The decor is absolutely stunning. I wouldn’t mind having that decor in my own home actually haha! I love that you mentioned the rooms feel like home despite the upscale interiors. There’s nothing worse than a hotel and staff that’s stuffy just because they have 5 stars or are in a posh location. It definitely seems like the Rosewood took good care of you and the fam. The personalized chocolate desserts with the M&M’s is such a cute touch.
