THE RESORT AT | PELICAN HILL

by dailykongfidence

“I have a deadline. One more email. Give me a second. We’re running late. Can you hurry up? We have to go!”

We live in a fast-paced world where we are always on the go. We get caught up in the day to day hustle of obligations, commitments, work, activities, and forget that while we are doing things for our family, we aren’t spending time with the family. And there is a distinct difference.

While quality time can be spent at home, it’s hard to completely unplug and focus on family time when there are so many distractions that beckon at you. To really get away and spend some quality time together, we headed a short 10 miles from where we live to The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast, CA. While only mere miles from home, I felt like I was in my own little world. Surrounded by the lush greens of a championship golf course overlooking the tranquil waves of the Pacific Ocean, THIS was the place for our family to spend some quality time together.

The Resort at Pelican Hill is reminiscent of Northern Italy with its Palladian-inspired architecture. The Resort offers 204 Bungalow guest rooms and 128 Villas that introduces an unparalleled level of serene luxury yet also feels like a home away from home. Situated on an elevated plateau that meets the landscape sweeping down to the ocean, the view from The Resort at Pelican Hill is nothing less than picture-perfect.

Welcome to The Resort at Pelican Hill

Lush landscape and panoramic views from every angle

We had the opportunity to stay in the Villas for our family staycation and these two to four bedroom Villas bring a new meaning to luxurious yet comfortable living. Our four-bedroom, 3,581 square feet Villa was incredibly spacious that it felt like a shame to be staying there with just our immediate family of five. I resisted the urge to call over my two sisters and their families to stay with us and share this enormous Villa!

The Villas at the Resort were designed to maximize views of the surrounding ocean, golf course, and fields while still maintaining a sense of privacy. While the Resort was at near full occupancy the weekend we stayed, you wouldn’t have known this from the peaceful sounds of nature you heard. Each Villa was designed to have a harmonious flow between the interior and exterior space where the Great Room meets the private terrace. With such an extensive floor plan, you can definitely have multigenerational families staying at these Villas and still have so much room. Each Villa is accompanied by its dedicated Villa staff (including concierge, butler, and personal chef upon request), snacks and additional necessities provided based on a questionnaire you complete before arrival, gourmet kitchen with Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, Nespresso machine and tea, 24-hour in-Villa dining, flat screen TVs in every bedroom, limestone fireplace, technology to enhance your stay (including high-speed wireless Internet, MP3 port, etc.), private garages, private washer and dryer, and exclusive access to the Villa Club’s heated pool and cabanas.

/ DAY /
While each of our children could have easily escaped to their own bedrooms in the Villa to play iPad or watch TV, we gathered around the immense living room and gourmet kitchen to nibble on some of the prepared snacks from the Resort (thank you Butler Jesse) and drink from the well stocked fridge (including milk for the kids and beers for adults) and plan what we would do together. With plenty of options for the entire family (all succinctly summarized in the “Weekly Pelican Experiences” trifold in our Welcome Packet) from Camp Pelican, to the Coliseum Pool, the Spa, Crystal Cove, or a round of golf, we decided to head to the pool for some fun in the sun!

Making plans for the day

The Resort at Pelican Hill is probably most known for their iconic Coliseum Pool. Not only is it is one of the world’s largest circular pools, the pool houses 1.1 million hand-cut mosaic glass tiles that were laid by hand! With its tiered decks and luxurious cabanas, guests are at a postcard-perfect location with views overlooking the Pacific Ocean and idealfor watching the breathtaking Californian sunset in the evening hours.

Beautiful plants and flowers line the entire property

What many guests don’t know is that there is also another pool on the property. Exclusive to Villa guests only, the private Villa pool has all the luxury, staff and attention that the Coliseum Pool does, but on a more intimate scale. The pool is quite expansive for being just for the Villa guests and overlooks the Villas with a sprawling view of the ocean. This was actually our pool of choice not only because it was a short three minute walk from our Villa, but it was less crowded and the service was impeccable. When the kiddos weren’t splashing in the pool, they were having foosball and ping pong tournaments off to the side of the pool. We loved not having to leave the Villa Clubhouse all day, enjoying lunch (hot dogs, burgers, and the best chicken tenders ever) poolside and also being able to rinse off in the spa-like showers in the bathrooms at the Villa Clubhouse. We literally spent the entire afternoon hanging out together at the pool laughing, splashing, little bit of fighting (let’s be honest here), but making memories overall.

/ EVENING /
Once our skins were bronzed with a golden tan, we called for a ride with our Butler in his Mercedes GL to the main Pelican Hill entrance and took a family stroll among the expansive property. Our conversation led to what we were grateful for and our summer plans. Needless to say, just after one day of being at the Resort, the kids were anxious to return again next month to take full advantage of Camp Pelican which offers incredible youth activities all day long and of course the pools. For a quick pre-dinner treat, I enjoyed the best iced honey latte at the Caffe & Market while the kids indulged in the Resort-made gelato. Live music filled the Great Room Social Lounge around 5PM where we relaxed before dinner and enjoyed handcrafted cocktails for just $5! The kids even danced to the live band who kept the guests entertained with their amazing covers.

Tired from the day’s festivities, we headed back to our Villa. There is just something about relaxing back in your spacious Villa and unwinding to a bottle of wine, conversation and laughter without worrying about kids running around or getting bored while the adults talk that is so nice during a vacation. We ordered in for dinner and the gourmet kitchen had everything we needed to have a family style meal from plates to silverware to even cooking supplies (but since we were on vacation there will be no cooking). We enjoyed our dinner while watching the sunset over the ocean from our terrace.

We retired to bedrooms (still shocked that we each got our own room) and slept soundly on the plush but firm mattresses and pillows as we snuggled in the cozy, plush comforter and sheets. You can only imagine the dreams we conceived for the excitement of another day filled our heads.

/ MORNING /
Gorgeous natural light filled the living room of the Villa as we woke up to the remarkable views of the ocean and sounds of chirping birds. With a hot Nespresso in hand, we lingered outside in our plush robes on the terrace taking time to just appreciate it all. Being outdoors and seeing such a stunning view helps to fill your heart with gratitude, appreciate the present moment, completely savor the experience, and starts the morning off on a positive note.

Taking time to appreciate it all

Our check-out time was 12PM, however, the Resort allows their guests to use their facilities the entire day even after you have checked out. You’d better believe the kids would not let us leave the property without a fight. So we didn’t put up a fight. I mean, another day at this breathtaking resort, who are we to argue? While we could have picked any of the numerous activities going on that day at the Resort, the kids were just as excited to go back to the pool as they were the day before. So we repeated the previous day’s events but it was even better. This staycation was exactly what our family needed to rediscover the joy of pure relaxation and quality time together in unparalleled comfort and space at the Resort.

The Resort at Pelican Hill is truly the ideal location to enjoy the best of everything Southern California has to offer. From daily activities to amazing dining and proximity to major theme parks, shopping and museums, it is THE luxury family destination to book.

From the resort lobby, smiling service, the manicured golf course to private terraces and shimmery Pacific Ocean views, the memories you make here will be passed down from generation to generation.

Throughout our entire staycation, not one rushed comment was made. They were replaced with, “Take your time.” “Sure, I can do it right now.” “Let’s play again.” “I’m glad we did this.” “I love family time.” And that my friends, is a sign of a vacation well spent.

You make me want to leave Altadena right now and head over to Pelican Hill! What a nice getaway for your and your family. Not gonna lie, the kids jumping on the bed looked like the most fun right above laying out poolside and watching the live band. What a blast that you were all able to hang out together and spend some quality time with one another. Can’t wait to see your next trip!!!

Haha you are too funny Danielle. But yes, sometimes the simplest things like jumping on the bed is the most fun. Just creating moments where you can laugh and be silly and enjoy each other’s company. Thank you!

Dear Christine,
This was truly such a pleasure to read. It’s so true about deadlines, wanting to read and respond to one more email and all the running around we do for our families that sometimes we forget to slow down and actually enjoy our families. It’s so wonderful that the five of you had this time together and I think it’s adorable
that you wanted to include your sisters and their families because the Villa was so huge. And yes, the Villa. Wow !!! What a completely amazing resort. The surroundings are so beautiful and you had so many incredible activities to choose from. I definitely need to find out when my family can take some time
and experience Pelican Hill for ourselves. I love the outfits you choose as well and such amazing earrings from the Bauble Bar.
Thank you so much for such a delightful share!
Yours truly,
Jennifer

Thank you so much Jennifer. As a mom, I love that you understand. The Resort at Pelican Hill was just what we needed and it brought us closer together and I actually had time to just relax and hang out (which never happens at home). The Villa was beautiful and I even told my sister that she has to come the next time with her family too. Hopefully you can make a trip to CA sometime soon and check out this amazing property with your family!

Before now, I’ve never heard of Pelican Hill, but after reading your post and seeing your pics, I’m so anxious to visit! I’m sure the Villas you stayed made your trip that much more enjoyable. It literally looks like heaven away form home! The views are stunning and the fields are gorgeous! It’s always nice to have a place full of people, yet you can’t hear a peep. I would love to bring my family here one day, parents and everyone else included because of the privacy we can all still have, yet being on the same property. It would be the perfect place for a family reunion! I just can’t get over all those amenities they have. I’d never want to leave!

Now this is what we all need in our life every now and then. The comments following your staycation prove it. It is true we live a very fast paced life and it doesn’t require much to break that pattern. Traveling far away is unnecessary when there is beauty so close to us and a place like The Resort at Pelican Hill where we make the magic happen. That villa sounds so luxurious and soothing for both body and mind and the views over the Pacific Ocean are breathtaking. I’d love to play golf on that course with those views surrounding me. As for me I need a vacation really bad and as I don’t live in Cali, I’d need a week or two at Pelican Hill to truly unwind and calm myself down, not to mention getting that bronzed skin. This truly seems like an amazing retreat and I’m thankful for the lovely review you wrote about it!

While this was a resort you went to spend time with the family, I couldn’t help but think of how beautiful and perfect a place like this would be a marriage proposal haha! Imagine being treated to all these luxurious amenities (um like a butler that drives you around in a Mercedes?! Yes please), a gorgeous place to yourself, with a breathtaking view you could wander for hours in. On top of that, you have gourmet food AND a live band. It couldn’t be anymore perfect!
I love how you also brought along with you the perfect vacation maxi dress. Honestly fits in with the whole vibe!
This is somewhere I could definitely see myself going for a relaxing vacation. sometimes we can’t just go city hopping and trying to squeeze in all the touristy stuff, sometimes we need a place to be pampered and wind down exactly like this. Definitely will be on my bucket list.

“I have a deadline. One more email. Give me a second. We’re running late. Can you hurry up? We have to go!” Literally all of those words come out of my mouth most days of the week! You are SO SO right! There is a big difference in doing things for the family and not spending actual quality time with the family! It’s so hard to completely unplug and focus on family time when there are so many distractions! How amazing that you live so close to The Resort at Pelican Hill and a resort that offers so much to do! The landscape sweeping down to the ocean is so beautiful! 3,581 square feet Villa! I mean that’s larger than most peoples homes! I’m not sure if that could even be classified as a villa! It’s a super kid friendly resort it seems! The pool is stunning and I am blown away by all of the beautiful images you captured of the resort and your family! I’ve been looking for some place to stay while traveling that accommodate the little ones and this meets all the requirements!

Soon as I started to read your post “one min, pls one more email, this is me telling my fiancee every time we have plans to go somewhere. Life goes by so fast and without realizing your kids are off to college. Staycation are the perfect way to get away in your own city. OMG the resorts looks so luxe and dreamy (can I please move there). The view is absolutely amazing. I loved the video you shared, you get a better sense of what the Villas look like. Now I want to travel and stay in a fabulous resort like this. Your family is so beautiful, still can’t believe you are a mommy of three. I love all your looks but adore the blue dress on you. I am happy you got to spend quality time with your family and relaxed by that amazing pool. Thanks for sharing, now I wan to book a trip to California 🙂

Yes, unfortunately, we spend so much time apart… And that’s true, there is no time to unplug and focus on family fully as we wanted it to. But there are days and occasions, like this one you mentioned when we can spend time somewhere far away. I think this Resort at Pelican Hill is a perfect place to do so. I would be glad to spend some time there and enjoy the nature, the view, the peace. Especially in my own Villa! How fab is that?! This place literally looks so good and home-like, you have everything you may need and that’s fantastic. I also love the classic design. And wow, the Coliseum Pool is such a treasure! I really enjoyed watching your video and reading this post!

Indeed, everything happens so fast in these days and we are constantly on the go. I sometimes find myself covered up in work that I don’t even have the time to eat or drink water. But yeah, having a break at this resort sounds heavenly! Loved your villa, it looked so cozy, just like a home and also chic! The living room along with terrace had the most beautiful and relaxing view ever. I’d love reading a book on that terrace and enjoying the view :). Really hope you had a great time at the resort! Wishing you a lovely day! xx

Woow! What a beautiful paradise to spend a relaxed time! I totally agree, sometimes because of the hectic pace of life we simply don’t take the time to enjoy quality and unique moments with the family. And that is the most valuable thing! That Resort at Pelican Hill is so wonderful. I live in San Diego, CA so I will definitely write this destination on my list. I love the villas, they are hug, luxurious and with a very nice decoration. The views are so dreamy, totally breathtaking. I’m pretty sure that you enjoyed every single moment there, having fun in such a great pools with your kids. You can’t never get tired of all the great activities that this resort has to offer.
Love it, thanks for sharing!

The Pelican Hill Resort is beyond amazing!! I’ve only been there for weddings but never stayed there, I didn’t know that they have 4 bedroom villas!!! Everything looked so luxurious with super high end appliances and plush beddings. I am loving the fact that it has multiple pools and activity options. I would def want to stay there for a staycation and bring the whole family. I don’t think I’ve seen your family on the blog and it is so endearing to see them making special appearances! 😀 Your kids are adorable and it looks like they really enjoyed and had a great time as well.

This place sounds like heaven! Your post has me seriously looking into booking a trip there with my family. From the villas to the butler to the private pool just for the villa guests, it sounds like the perfect staycation for sure! And yes to unplugging while not needing to travel to far away from home. xo, Jessica

I’ve been to Newport Beach area but didn’t know to stay here. Is it pet friendly, our family is consisted of 2 of us and 2 dogs :). The Resort at Pelican Hill is so so beautiful, thanks for sneak peeks at this reminiscent of Northern Italy with the Palladian-inspired architecture. The villa you stayed in is gorgeous, so spacious. And the amenities are world class. I don’t blame the kids for wanting to come back to the pool on the second day, I would too! I’m excited that even when you check out you could still use the facilities, that’s very nice of them.
Every photo you took here is postcard picture perfect. I need to check out this hotel when I visit southern Cali next.
