MIXING | PRINTS

by dailykongfidence

I used to shudder when I thought of mixing prints for fear of clashing. But I am seeing more and more people mixing prints with their outfits and have been admiring them from afar. Mixing prints helps to elevate your look from basic to fashion forward and more importantly it’s using things you already have in your closet but pairing them in unexpected ways! Since fashion is about taking risks at times and going out of your comfort zone, I decided to go for it and create a look mixing prints. And I must admit, I am obsessed!

For this look I went with this sheer, star print blouse with Peter Pan collar with high waisted, striped trousers. Both of these pieces are so affordable you will have to get them (exact links below)! While printed, the sheer top is subtle enough to mix with the stripes without competing against the pattern. For my first mixed print look it is on the safer side, but I can’t wait to have more fun with mixing unexpected prints together.

/ Tips for Mixing Prints /

1. Pick a dominant print and an accent print: in this case my dominant print are the stripes and the accent print is the subtle stars on my top
2. Make sure the different prints share at least one similar color: what a surprise, I went with black
3. Mix the prints with different sizes: the stripes are long and skinny and the stars are larger
4. Pair prints with a neutral: with my look the stripes are considered a neutral
5. If its the same print, play with size: the top can have the same print as the bottom but maybe on a larger scale
6. Break up patterns: I added a velvet blazer to break up the look
7. Mix prints with tailored pieces and different textures: I’ve seen a lot of plaid blazers with striped shirts that look amazing
8. Polka dots and stripes always work: the classic print of polka dots and stripes always look great together
9. Mixing thin and thick stripes: Think a thick stripe cardigan with thin striped shirt
10. Printed accessories also add to the look: you can add printed earrings or stockings for a print on print look

I do find it challenging to mix prints because it can clash with each other but I think you did a great job with mixing Stars and Stripes. I also think breaking up the patterns or sticking with the same colors help!

Gurrrrrrl, this is my FAVORITE look!! I learned a lot from your 10 tips to mixing prints. I was always weary of mixing prints and envied those who could do it so effortlessly. I love the idea of mixing different sizes of the same print whether it’s stipes, polkadots, stars, etc. I’m definitely going to utilized these tips! I really love those pants though. They’re really affordable and look super high end!

Totally agree with you on this – it seems like all the rules are being thrown out the window, and mixing prints is the new rule! Actually it almost seems like there are no rules! I’m still a little timid when it comes to mixing prints, but I love the way you did it. Super classy and perfect for the holidays. Hope you had a great long weekend!

Hey beautiful,
Hope you’re having a good day! This is my fav! Mixing prints is one of my favorite trends in history, no joke. I think a lot of people get stuck and stressed when it comes to mixing different patterns. And you don’t always have to follow the rules, in my opinion. But it’s the perfect way to start if you aren’t sure how. I love your style and the look you put together. Those pants are so cute! I saw a pair just like that when I was out shopping and I really liked them. Perfect outfit for the holidays and any occasion! Thanks for sharing!

Honestly i think it’s all on how you mix it and make it look. There are some combinations that are just or of the question while others arenokah. I feel like all your prints compliment eachother and that’s key

Okay this is the best mixed print outfit that I have seen! I am obsessed with the striped pants and starry top. I always stray away from mixing and matching, but what is fashion if you don’t take risks. Your tips are so helpful! It’s so smart to keep the prints in the same color family. I also like how you paired this look with a red velvet blazer.

Thank you for sharing!

You killed it with this look one of my favourite looks of yours for sure!
I love mixing prints.
I’m also a little bit Obsessed with stars so that sheer star print top is right up my alley.
I love how you broke it up with the velvet blazer the texture with the sheer top and the wide leg striped pants plus all your accessories made this a winning look.
I also love the clean look of white nail polish on short nails so minimal and stylish.

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. Your style is a real killer one and I LOVE this mixing of prints and your guide to how to do it. Before reading this I didn’t even know what a Peter Pan collar is, but you always learn don’t you? 🙂 As for mixing patterns myself I’ve become a lot braver lately and sometimes go all in and sometime am a bit more subtle like when you said one should choose an accent pattern.
Thanks for the tips and once again, wow for the pictures!
