As you know I am a forever denim girl. When in doubt itβs always denim for me. Even when I am not in doubt. I attribute it to being born and raised in Southern CA. There is just something relaxed and easy going about denim. But that doesnβt mean denim always has to be casual.
When dressing up denim I opt for colored denim such as black or even coated denim (that look of faux leather). Darker washes or coated jeans instantly dress up a denim outfit and takes away the casualness of it allowing it to be suitable for going out. Accessories also play a huge role in dressing up denim including jewelry, shoes, and bags. Below are some of my tips for dressing up denim as we get into fall.
/ Tips for Dressing Up Denim /
- Choose darker denim washes or coated denim
- Wear a dressy top (think lace camisoles, bodysuits, off the shoulder) or even rich fabrics like tweed, velvet, or sequins
- Shoes make a difference so add some heels
- Accentuate the waist with a belt
- Add a nighttime bag like a clutch or a shoulder bag
This date night outfit encompasses all of my tips for dressing up denim with the exception of a belt. I like the button details on these Topshop jeans so pairing a belt with all the buttons seemed a bit unnecessary. I added my favorite jewelry as of late by Via Saviene as well as my Chanel pumps with pearl detail on the heels and I am ready to go out!

Oh girl I hear ya! I’m a denim girl too but omg I’m struggling to find any good denim to fit me during this pregnancy! Got any tips for me?
I’ve tried finding flattering shorts but I don’t think any exist haha! But I definitely love a good dark wash to dress things up π

I’m super obsessed with this outfit! I love your heels and denim so much! What size are you wearing if you don’t mind me asking? I really love the button detail and the price is so good! Also, can we talk about your shoes! So incredibly in love with them. I totally love dark denim and have not purchased coated denim in awhile but I always love the look of coated denim! All of your tips are marvelous! I’m definitely all for adding heels to really make your look seem put together well! I swear you could make ANYTHING look perfect! You are such a great stylist!

Whoaaa!! I’m literally in love with the whole look. You look so classy and chic! And those Chanel shoes are everything. I need a pair ASAP. Xx
Pretty much until recently I wasn’t a denim person but I love it now and can’t get enough. How would you dress up denim if you can’t wear heels? This is seriously my current dilemma haha. Loving the denim you picked. Such gorgeous silhouette. Looks prefect with that top.
Super obsessed with that top and the ruffle details <3 π Makes for such a classy, chic, yet effortless outfit!

Thanks for the tips. I agree shoes play a very important role in defining the outfits. So pairing some black denim with heels would definitely make a statement. Also outerwear! They are can change the look of the outfit too!

Girl, I love your style so much. You always look so put-together. And this is just my favourite colour mix. By the way, I have exactly the same body-top and I’m madly in love with it, but I’ve never tried to pair it with denim. I think this look rocks, defo need to try it as well. And what could be more classy, than this Chanel flap, right?

You make jeans look so chic! I am a socal girl as well, so I’m ALWAYS in denim! I tend to wear darker jeans, only because they are more flattering on my body type. I loved reading all of your tips on ways to dress up denim. I am OBSESSED with painted jeans! They give the jeans a leather like look, and also have the comfort of jeans. The button details on your pants are beautiful and your bodysuit looks great with them!

Though I am not from southern CA, denim is one of my most owned and worn pieces in my wardrobe! There’s just so many styles and colors to choose from. My latest obsessions are Mom and distressed jeans. I love your buttoned ones too and you’re right about needing a belt with them. You picked the perfect complements to go with them!
Love the jeans.
So beautiful.

I am SO not a denim woman but when I do, it has to be of a darker wash, paired with heels, a statement bag, and fire engine red lippy π
Absolutely gorgeous Christine! I am also a denim lover and your tips here on how to dress denim up couldn’t be more on point. I love adding some nice heels and a dressier bag, and I am so thankful for denim being accepted now in all kinds of social outings π Hope you have a great week ahead, dearest. Love from England
